Holiday cocktails are just that much better with a good rum. And we’re lucky to be in an era where rum isn’t just a syrupy addition to your drink, but rather there’s a bevy of great sipping rums, not unlike a fine Scotch.
A spiked egg nog or hot chocolate with a rather dark and stormy rum right now can really warm the soul.
Ian Burrell, the creator of Equiano Rum, is known throughout the industry and co-created the brand. He describes this as the “world’s first African and Caribbean rum,” a blend made with juice from two distilleries on two continents … Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados and Grays in Mauritius off the coast of Madagascar.
The rum was named after Olaudah Equiano, a Nigerian-born freedom fighter and abolitionist.
The rum is first distilled and aged at least 10 years in Mauritius, resting in ex-Cognac and French Limousin oak. The rum then heads to Barbados where it’s blended with rum aged in ex-bourbon casks.
The rum maker Burrell describes the spirit’s taste as butterscotch and toffee with orange peel and vanilla. There’s a hint of buttered wood as well.
Equiano Rum clocks in at 43% ABV and has a suggested price of $59.99 per 750ml bottle. For more information or to find a bottle, go here.
