Maker’s Mark, the Kentucky bourbon brand that’s long been a symbol of craftsmanship and quality, has announced a pair of key leadership moves. Dr. Blake Layfield has been named the brand’s new Master Distiller, and Beth Buckner will continue her work as the lead blender. Together, they represent the next chapter in the distillery’s evolution, one that balances respect for tradition with a drive for innovation and sustainability.
Rob Samuels, eighth-generation whisky maker and managing director of Maker’s Mark, explained the significance of the appointments: “From the very beginning, vision has been a driving force for Maker’s Mark. Bill and Margie Samuels created something truly unique in bourbon, and Blake, with his deep understanding of both the craft and the business, is exactly the kind of leader we need to take the brand forward.”
Dr. Blake Layfield, who steps into the role of Master Distiller, will be tasked with overseeing Maker’s Mark’s signature taste, as well as driving new product innovation. He’ll also continue the brand’s focus on sustainable practices at the distillery’s Star Hill Farm, where environmental stewardship plays a significant role in the production process.
Layfield, who joined Suntory Global Spirits in 2019 after a tenure at Diageo, brings an extensive background in R&D and quality leadership. He holds a PhD in Food Science from North Carolina State University, and a General Certificate in Distilling from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling. He’s also an active member of the Kentucky Distillers’ Association’s Research Committee and serves on the board of the James B. Beam Institute at the University of Kentucky.
Beth Buckner, who’s been with Maker’s Mark since 2013, has earned her place as one of the industry’s most respected blenders. She’s already made her mark on the brand with the creation of the Wood Finishing Series, and her ability to innovate while respecting the deep roots of Maker’s Mark’s heritage has made her a key figure in the company’s ongoing pursuit of flavor excellence. In her continued role as lead blender, Buckner will further refine the brand’s approach to blending, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in bourbon.
The leadership trio is rounded out by Kim Harmon, who has been with Maker’s Mark since 2019 and currently serves as General Manager. Harmon’s work was instrumental in the distillery’s 2022 B Corp certification, a notable achievement in the industry. With her experience at both Suntory Global Spirits and Heaven Hill, Harmon’s vision and collaborative approach make her a natural fit for overseeing operations at the distillery.
With these appointments, Maker’s Mark is positioning itself to not only preserve its legacy but to lead the way forward in a rapidly changing bourbon landscape.
