New Riff Distilling, the craft distillery known for its innovative approach to whiskey-making, is set to release a new batch of its award-winning Balboa Rye this month.

Originally launched in 2019, Balboa Rye holds a significant place in the distillery’s history, being the first whiskey they produced using an heirloom grain. The rye, a rare variety that dates back to the 1940s, was once a staple in the region but had all but disappeared from production until New Riff revived it.

The heirloom Balboa rye, with its bold flavors and distinct profile, has garnered a loyal following since its debut. New Riff’s dedication to craftsmanship is evident in the careful distillation process, using a mash bill of 95% Balboa rye and 5% malted rye.

The whiskey is bottled at 100 proof without chill filtration, preserving its complexity and natural character. The result is a whiskey that opens with spiced red fruit, clove, and pepper, giving way to the rich taste of rye bread, and finishing with hints of horehound candy and pink peppercorn.

Balboa Rye’s appeal goes beyond its unique flavor profile. It has earned significant acclaim in the spirits world, including double gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the Barleycorn Awards. It is widely regarded as a standout rye in an increasingly crowded market, especially as it is one of the only expressions available made from this particular grain.

“We knew the potential of Balboa rye when we first encountered it,” said New Riff co-founder Jay Erisman. “Now, with the return of this special release, we are excited to share it with whiskey enthusiasts once again.”

The 2025 release will be available beginning January 31st at select retail locations and through New Riff’s website, with a suggested price of $54.99. As always, New Riff continues to push boundaries while honoring tradition, offering a truly exceptional rye experience.
