Whiskey brand 15 STARS has made a bold move with its latest release, the Three Ports Fine-Aged Bourbon. This limited-edition expression combines 9- and 15-year-old Kentucky straight bourbons, finished in three different types of port casks—tawny, white, and ruby. The result is an interesting blend that takes the classic bourbon profile and adds an extra layer of complexity.
At 103 proof, Three Ports immediately stands out with its nose. The aroma is fruity, with a solid mix of concord grape, plum, and blueberry, along with notes of honeysuckle and vanilla. Dried fruits like apple and pear also make an appearance, balanced by a bit of spice and oak in the background. It’s an inviting, well-rounded nose, but there’s enough depth to keep things interesting.
On the palate, the sweetness hits first … blackberry, dates, and pineapple juice come to the forefront, giving the whiskey a rich, almost syrupy feel. It’s not overwhelmingly sweet, though. As the flavors settle, you get hints of cinnamon, fresh wood, and light pepper, which help temper the sugariness and give the whiskey some structure. The balance between the sweet fruit notes and the spice is well done, and it makes for an enjoyable sip.
The finish lingers with mixed berries, fruitcake, and a touch of oak, leaving behind a lasting impression that feels both smooth and refined. While the whiskey is sweet, it never feels cloying, and the layers of flavor stay with you.
At $179, Three Ports is a splurge, but it’s a solid pick for anyone looking to try something a little different. It’s a well-executed, enjoyable bourbon that makes good use of the port barrel finish. If you’re into experimenting with flavor profiles, this one’s worth considering.
