There’s something deeply satisfying about discovering a whiskey that carries both character and craftsmanship … and Oaklore Distilling Co.’s latest release has both in spades.
Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Oaklore is introducing a limited-edition addition to its “Story Series” lineup: the Port Cask Finish Rye Whiskey.
Aged a total of seven years and bottled at 92 proof, this small batch rye was first matured in a mix of char #2 and #3 new white oak barrels before spending another 12 to 18 months resting in port wine casks. Those barrels had already seen nearly two decades of use in Solera-style port production before taking on their second life at Oaklore. The result is a deep, fruit-forward rye with structure, spice, and complexity.
Only 90 bottles are available nationally, making this a rare and deliberate release … one that’s already earned double gold and a 96-point rating at the New York International Spirits Competition.
The whiskey opens with dark cherry and soft rye spice on the nose, backed by brown sugar and a touch of oak. That deep amber hue hints at what’s to come: a sip full of dark fruit, warm spices, and just enough herbal character to keep things interesting. A finish of raisin, white pepper, and subtle herbs lingers pleasantly.
Oaklore uses a mash bill of 70% rye, 20% corn, and 10% malted barley, the same foundation as its flagship 6-year straight rye. But the extra time in port barrels elevates the experience, adding layers that are both nuanced and bold. North Carolina’s Piedmont region … hot summers, cool winters, and humidity to spare … lends itself to more active barrel aging, and that influence is apparent in the glass.
This is not a whiskey rushed to market. Co-founders Thomas Bogan and Matt Simpkins, along with partner Travis Masters, kept a close eye on this expression until they felt it told the right story. And in many ways, that’s what Oaklore is all about: whiskey shaped by time, climate, wood, and intention.
Oaklore Distilling Co. may have started with a neighborly conversation at a bus stop, but what it’s become is a standout in North Carolina’s spirits scene. The Port Cask Finish Rye is more than a seasonal release … it’s a window into the deeper layers of what thoughtful American whiskey can be.
