In the Atlanta suburb of Chamblee, there’s a distillery that looks as much like a modern gallery as it does a home for spirits. The Distillery of Modern Art (DoMA) isn’t content with simply filling bottles … it’s shaping an experience where whiskey meets creativity, both in the glass and in the atmosphere.

The collection showcases a mix of tradition and experimentation. Corn Whiskey Batch #1 (102 proof) leads the way with an Amburana wood finish, layering honey cake, sweet cinnamon, and spice on the nose. The palate carries fruit compote, peanut brittle, and roasted corn, weaving rustic comfort with unexpected complexity. Each batch is unique, but all carry the same ambition … to elevate a spirit often overlooked.

Next, Bourbon (90 proof) offers a lighter, approachable pour with depth that unfolds gradually. Aromas of candied dark fruits, caramel, vanilla, and a surprising touch of spearmint give way to flavors of dried fruits, honey, and subtle florals. The medium-dry finish makes it a whiskey that invites another sip without overwhelming.

The star, though, is the Rye Whiskey (100 proof). Made with Abruzzi Rye, it balances boldness with elegance. The nose reveals leather, tobacco, chocolate, and herbs. On the palate, milk and dark chocolate mingle with coffee, cashews, and the classic rye spice. The texture is creamy and the finish lingers, carrying just enough heat to keep things interesting.

What sets DoMA apart isn’t only the flavor profiles but the philosophy behind them. Labels designed by local artists, a distillery space that doubles as an art venue, and a hospitality-driven approach reflect a belief that spirits should spark conversation as much as they satisfy. Each whiskey feels intentional … crafted to express character rather than mimic trends.

DoMA’s trio may still be young, but it already shows promise. The bourbon hints at future bottled-in-bond potential, while the rye reads like a love letter to its grain. At around $40 for the corn whiskey and $50 for the bourbon and rye, they offer fair value and are available to ship across much of the U.S.
