For the first time in its storied history, Elijah Craig is turning up the heat on rye whiskey. The Bardstown-based brand, famously dubbed the “Father of Bourbon” for pioneering charred oak aging, has just announced the release of its inaugural Barrel Proof Rye Whiskey … and whiskey fans are buzzing.
This new expression marks a major expansion of Elijah Craig’s acclaimed barrel proof lineup. While bourbon has long carried the torch in its uncut, unfiltered form, rye enthusiasts have had to wait … until now. Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye debuts with Batch A925, aged an impressive 12 years and 3 months, and bottled at 108 proof.
The whiskey itself is described as a deep copper beauty, layered with aromas of baking spices, gingerbread, and molasses. On the palate, it balances rich stewed fruits with touches of cinnamon, while nutmeg and a classic rye spice finish linger long after the sip. It’s a complex pour designed to satisfy seasoned barrel proof fans, but approachable enough for those dipping their toes into the style.
“As whiskey fans know, barrel proof is kind of like that famous box of chocolates,” says Master Distiller Conor O’Driscoll. “You don’t know exactly what you’re going to get until the barrel dumps. In this case, we got a 108-proof treat that drinks bolder than its number would suggest.”
Elijah Craig announced that its Barrel Proof Rye will now be a three-times-a-year tradition, releasing in January, May, and September … mirroring the brand’s barrel proof bourbon schedule. Each batch will follow Elijah Craig’s coding system, where letters and numbers indicate release order, month, and year.
Rolling out nationwide later this month, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof Rye will be offered in 750 ml bottles at a suggested retail price of $74.99 … the same price point as its barrel proof bourbon sibling. Collectors and rye lovers alike will want to keep an eye out; with its age statement, proof, and pedigree, this debut release won’t be gathering dust on the shelves.
