If you spend enough time nosing around the whiskey world (pun intended), you’ll quickly realize that the folks at World Whiskey Society aren’t exactly into playing it safe. Their latest release? Proof of that philosophy … and then some.

The new Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Mizunara Shochu Casks, also known as the Samurai Edition, just hit shelves … or at least, a very limited number of them. With only 2,000 bottles released globally, this 108-proof bourbon isn’t just rare … it’s practically elusive.

What makes it special? Well, bourbon finished in Mizunara oak isn’t totally unheard of, but these particular barrels were previously used to age Shochu, Japan’s beloved traditional spirit. That adds a whole new layer of intrigue to this Kentucky classic.

“We’re proud of this extraordinary, virtually unrepeatable bourbon finished in Japanese Mizunara Shochu casks,” says Alex Kogan, CEO of World Whiskey Society. And we believe him … mostly because the whiskey world’s unofficial flavor referee, Jim Murray, scored it a glowing 93.5, noting it’s the first time in his 20,000-plus tastings that he’s encountered such a combo.

The bourbon itself starts with familiar roots: a mash bill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley from Bardstown Bourbon Company, one of the most advanced distilleries in the country. But after its traditional American oak maturation, it takes a trip east … metaphorically speaking … with that finishing time in Japanese Mizunara Shochu casks. The result? A whiskey that’s smooth, sweet, and sophisticated but still brings that bold heat bourbon lovers expect.

Oh, and let’s not ignore the packaging. It comes crowned with a striking Samurai helmet topper, practically daring you to open it (though collectors might just leave it sealed on their shelves).

Retailing for $124, this bottle isn’t exactly your casual Friday night sipper, but for adventurous whiskey fans and collectors, it’s a worthy addition to the shelf.

Curious? You can track it down at select retailers or via the World Whiskey Society’s website. But fair warning: With only 2,000 bottles floating around, you might want to act fast … the Samurai doesn’t tend to stick around.

  1. Mizunara aging does add some distinctive notes to whiskey. They tend to be of a more soft, subtle & at times floral nature. I wonder how these softer elements will show against the bolder notes of bourbon.
    An interesting bottle!

    1. Legent, and other blends of this nature, have shown that a softer edge to bourbon really improves the taste. Kind of like adding finishing salt to ice cream or chili powder to watermelon. * In our opinion.
