Whiskey lovers tend to be a curious bunch. Give us a new barrel finish, an unusual grain bill or a fresh twist on an old tradition, and we’ll usually pour ourselves a glass just to see what all the fuss is about.
Now comes something that might be one of the more intriguing spirit experiments we’ve seen in a while.
It’s called SHĀNG, and instead of simply borrowing ideas from another culture, it attempts to blend two of the world’s oldest distilling traditions into something entirely new. Think Chinese baijiu meeting American whiskey … and somehow finding common ground in the same bottle.
If you’ve never had baijiu before, you’re not alone. It’s the world’s most consumed spirit, but it still flies under the radar for many Americans. Produced in China for thousands of years, baijiu is known for bold aromas and distinctive flavors that can surprise first-time drinkers.
SHĀNG doesn’t try to hide those roots. In fact, it leans into them.
The process starts in China’s Chìshuǐ River basin using red sorghum and traditional solid-state fermentation techniques that have been refined over centuries. The spirit is distilled and aged in clay pots before making an unusual journey across the Pacific.
That’s where Kentucky enters the picture.
The spirit is further refined into a whiskey base, matured in American oak and blended in the Bluegrass State, creating what the company calls “jiàngxiāng whiskey.” Whether that becomes an entirely new spirits category remains to be seen, but it’s certainly one of the more creative mashups we’ve heard about lately.
The debut lineup includes two expressions.
The first, SHĀNG Dàn Yǎ, is bottled at 100 proof and spends anywhere from one month to just under a year in charred American oak barrels. Expect floral aromas, savory umami notes, fruit, chocolate, baking spices and a long, warming finish.
The second bottle, SHĀNG East + West Kentucky Blend, may be the easier starting point for traditional whiskey drinkers. It combines the jiàngxiāng whiskey with an American red sorghum whiskey, resulting in a softer profile featuring vanilla, toasted grain and caramel notes at 92 proof.
What’s perhaps most interesting isn’t just what’s inside the bottle … it’s the collaboration behind it. Chinese baijiu producers, Kentucky whiskey makers and blending experts all contributed their specialties, creating a spirit that’s less about replacing whiskey or baijiu and more about exploring what happens when the two traditions work together.
Innovation in whiskey often comes from tweaking mash bills, experimenting with barrels or extending aging times. SHĀNG takes a different route by asking a much bigger question…
What happens when two cultures with thousands of years of distilling history decide to create something neither one could make alone?
Whether longtime whiskey fans embrace it or simply enjoy trying something completely different, SHĀNG is certainly one of the more fascinating new arrivals on the spirits shelf this year.
SHĀNG Dàn Yǎ carries a suggested retail price of $64.99 for a 500 mL bottle, while SHĀNG East + West Kentucky Blend is priced at $45.99 for 500 mL.
Sometimes the best whiskey stories aren’t about looking backward … they’re about discovering where the next chapter might begin.
