The comedian behind the laughs is bringing a little Mexican-American flavor to the tequila business, with three expressions that are anything but ordinary.
Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias has made a pretty good living making people laugh. Now he’s hoping to give people something else to smile about when they raise a glass.
The popular comedian has entered the tequila business with Pocho Fino, a new line of Mexican-American tequilas that combines his heritage, personality and, naturally, a little humor. And if you were expecting something ordinary, well, you probably haven’t watched much of Fluffy’s comedy.
The name itself has a little personality. Pocho is a term commonly used to describe Mexican-Americans, while Fino means fine. Put them together and you’ve got a brand that embraces both sides of the cultural experience rather than trying to choose one.
The brand describes itself as being rooted in Mexico and raised in the United States. Its tequila starts with Blue Weber agave grown in Jalisco, Mexico, before the flavored expressions are blended with natural ingredients in the U.S. and bottled here.
The lineup includes three expressions, each with its own personality.
Blanco Tequila (40% ABV) is the traditional starting point, featuring sweet cooked agave, bright citrus, tropical fruit and subtle earthy and black pepper notes. It’s unaged, clean and lightly sweet on the finish. In other words, this is the one for folks who prefer their tequila without a lot of extra fuss.
Then things get a little more interesting.
Mexican Candy (35% ABV) takes its inspiration from the sweet-and-spicy treats familiar to anyone who’s spent time around a Mexican candy shop. It combines candied watermelon, fresh lime and a little jalapeño heat. Think sweet first, followed by a citrusy kick and just enough spice to keep things interesting.
It’s a flavor combination that should work particularly well in a margarita, especially the brand’s suggested Sweet & Spicy Margarita.
Grilled Pineapple (35% ABV) brings something a little different to the party. Built on the Blanco tequila, it features caramelized pineapple, a touch of sweet hickory smoke and agave sweetness. It’s reminiscent of pineapple coming off the backyard grill, which sounds like a pretty good place to be even if you aren’t holding a glass of tequila.
The brand suggests enjoying all three expressions neat or mixing them into cocktails. There’s a classic Pocho Fino Margarita built around the Blanco, a Sweet & Spicy Margarita featuring Mexican Candy, and a Smoky Pineapple Paloma for the grilled pineapple crowd.
But there’s more to Pocho Fino than just putting a comedian’s name on a bottle and hoping his fans show up at the liquor store.
Iglesias has made his Mexican-American heritage a central part of the brand. The idea is to celebrate the combination of cultures, traditions, music and food that helped shape him. The brand even describes its personality as the kind of place where banda and Biggie can share the same playlist and nobody thinks twice about it.
There’s also a sentimental touch. Every bottle features illustrations of Iglesias’ beloved late dogs, Vinnie and Risa, who are remembered as guardians of the brand. It’s a personal tribute to two companions who were clearly an important part of his life, and a reminder that not everything about a celebrity spirits venture has to be about celebrity.
Pocho Fino is already making some noise in the marketplace, with skyrocketing retail sales and since launch.
As for the price, these bottles won’t require a comedy career to afford. The suggested retail price for a 750ml bottle is $29.99, with smaller 375ml bottles also available for $17.99.
So whether you’re a Fluffy fan, a tequila enthusiast or someone who simply enjoys a little watermelon, jalapeño and pineapple with their agave, Pocho Fino has a few things worth exploring.
And if the tequila doesn’t make you laugh, you can always put on one of Iglesias’ comedy specials. Just don’t confuse the two and expect the bottle to tell jokes.
