If you like your rye whiskey with a little extra depth, and a bit of attitude, A. Smith Bowman Distillery has something new worth talking about.
The Virginia-based distillery is rolling out Abraham Bowman Special Release #26, a limited-edition rye that leans heavily into experimentation … and patience. In fact, it’s been 16 years since the distillery last put this much focus on a rye release in the Abraham Bowman lineup, and this one feels like a confident return to form.
So what’s the twist? Time and proof. Distilled back in 2015, this rye spent a leisurely 11 years aging in the distillery’s cooler Warehouse A, allowing flavors to develop at a slower, more deliberate pace. Then they cranked things up a notch, bottling it at 110 proof … well above the 90-proof rye that kicked off the series back in 2010.
The result is a whiskey that walks a nice line between bold and balanced. On the nose, expect a warm welcome of maple syrup with a hint of spring freshness. Take a sip and you’ll find layers of vanilla, apricot, and a pop of orange zest, all grounded by a subtle earthiness. The finish? Classic rye spice, with black pepper and just a whisper of mint to keep things lively.
Master Distiller David Bock notes that dialing in that 110 proof was key … it’s where the whiskey really found its voice, delivering both intensity and nuance without losing its smooth edge.
If you’re hoping to snag a bottle, you’ll need a bit of luck. The release will be available via an online lottery starting May 4th, with winners earning the right to purchase in person at the distillery’s gift shop. A limited number will also trickle out to select retailers, bars, and restaurants nationwide.
At $79.99 for a 750ml bottle, this is one of those pours that rewards curiosity … and maybe a little patience, just like the whiskey itself.
