Some legends never fade. More than 70 years after his untimely death, James Dean remains the ultimate symbol of youthful rebellion, effortless cool, and Americana. Now, that enduring legacy is finding a new expression in a whiskey glass thanks to Lasso Motel Whiskey’s latest limited-edition release: the James Dean 13-Year Rye.
Created in partnership with the James Dean Estate, the new release feels like a natural fit. Dean built his reputation on authenticity and a refusal to follow the crowd, and Lasso Motel has quickly earned a reputation for taking a similarly unconventional approach to whiskey.
Founded by Devin Odell and inspired by the storied Belmont Hotel in Dallas, Lasso Motel has become known for its lineup of well-aged whiskeys and adventurous cask finishes sourced from around the world. The brand has built a loyal following by combining premium whiskey with a distinctly rock-and-roll personality that stands apart from many of the industry’s more traditional offerings.
The new James Dean release takes things in a more classic direction, showcasing a 13-year-old rye whiskey distilled in Indiana from the familiar and beloved 95% rye, 5% malted barley mash bill that whiskey enthusiasts often associate with some of the finest rye whiskeys coming out of the state. Bottled at a robust 112 proof, it promises plenty of flavor while still allowing the maturity of the whiskey to shine through.
According to Lasso Motel’s founder, Odell, the collaboration was about more than attaching a famous name to a bottle.
“James Dean embodied the same spirit Lasso Motel Whiskey was built on … rebellion, authenticity, the kind of effortless cool that never needs to explain itself,” he said. “This collaboration was natural. Thirteen years in the barrel, and it shows.”
The whiskey itself sounds tailor-made for rye fans. The nose opens with notes of green pear, cherry wood, burnt sugar, and cinnamon spice. On the palate, dark fruit and rich cacao emerge alongside baking spices before giving way to a subtle floral finish.
The connection to Dean goes deeper than attitude alone. Both the actor and the whiskey share Indiana roots, something not lost on the James Dean Estate.
“Lasso Motel Whiskey carries the same rebel soul and timeless Americana that continues to define James Dean’s legacy,” said Coy and Charles Winslow of the James Dean Estate. “It’s extra special that it comes from Indiana, just like Jimmy.”
For whiskey collectors, movie buffs, and anyone who appreciates a good story behind their pour, this release checks plenty of boxes. The bottle joins a growing portfolio that already includes award-winning rye expressions, cask-finished bourbons, and older age-stated releases that have helped put Lasso Motel on the radar of enthusiasts looking for something a little different.
Available in limited quantities with a suggested retail price of $149.99, the Lasso Motel x James Dean 13-Year Rye is expected to attract both whiskey drinkers and Dean fans eager to own a piece of modern Americana.
After all, some icons never go out of style. Neither, it seems, does a well-aged rye.
