Some bourbons make an impression with a big punch of flavor. Others win you over by making every sip feel effortless. The Maven Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey manages to do both, and that’s a pretty nice trick for a whiskey to pull off.
We introduced The Maven a little while back, and after spending some time with it, there’s plenty to appreciate. First off, the smoothness is hard to miss. At 94 proof, it’s remarkably easygoing, with a rich, mellow character that doesn’t sacrifice flavor along the way.
The real fun is in the depth. Caramel and vanilla show up early, followed by toasted almonds, bittersweet chocolate and a little gingerbread spice. There’s a nice balance of sweetness and oak, with layers that unfold gradually rather than trying to hit you over the head. It’s a whiskey that takes its time, and thankfully, there’s no reason to rush it.
That complexity makes sense when you consider The Maven’s unusual blend of six whiskeys and its use of five different oak varieties, including Japanese Mizunara and Pacific Northwest Garryana. There’s a lot going on behind the scenes, but the finished product never feels complicated for the sake of being complicated.
The Maven isn’t just another expensive bourbon with a fancy oak story. It’s a genuinely impressive whiskey that backs up its pedigree with exceptional smoothness, layered flavor and a finish that sticks around for all the right reasons.
At $199, it’s a splurge, no question. But if you’re looking for a bourbon that rewards slowing down and savoring the glass, The Maven makes a pretty convincing case. This one has earned its place on our whiskey shelf.
